You Do Not Have To Be A Resident Of Hawaii To Participate In The 529 Plan

Nearly every state offers section 529 plans for families who wish to save money for their children's college expenses. The quality of each plan, in terms of the possible fees, rules and regulations will vary. Some plans allow the account owner to change beneficiaries, while others do not. HI-529 is a college savings plan that is available for Hawaii residents regardless of their income level. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles may open an account for a relative with as little as $15. This plan is available for participation whether or not you live in Hawaii. Also, the beneficiary does not have to be a Hawaii resident.
