Contact your local police — don’t do it yourself

Many people who are involved at the scene of the accident, or who are victims of a hit and run will often ask me if they should do their own reverse lookup license plate search as they were able to get all or part of the other persons license plate number. My advice is always the same: if you are involved as a victim, any such information should always be turned over to your local police authorities first. If your vehicle was damaged, or you have been injured and required medical treatment, this information should also be given to your insurance company for follow-up by them. The police and the insurance companies have the professional and legal resources to deal with the situation — you don't. Protect your interests: let them do what they are trained to do.
